What Is the Xbox Network?
The subscription service offers more than just games
The Xbox network, previously known as Xbox Live, is Microsoft's online service for gaming and content distribution for the Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One video game systems.
It lets you play games against other people online as well as download demos, trailers, and even full games in the Xbox Live Arcade. You get to choose a nickname (called a gamertag) which is how you're known to other people in any games you play. You can keep friends lists to stay in touch with real-life friends or new people you meet online you like to play with.
Xbox Live Gold is a subscription-based service that can be purchased for one month, three-month, and one-year periods. You can either buy subscription cards at retail stores or you can use your credit card on the console itself to sign up. You need an Xbox 360 or Xbox One, as well as a broadband internet service provider, to use it.
There are two levels of service. The free level, previously called Xbox Live Silver, lets you download things from the Xbox Marketplace; chat with friends; use apps such as Netflix, ESPN, and many others; and share your gamer profile with other users. You can even chat in groups and access online multiplayer features for free-to-play games. However, you can't play most games online without an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Xbox Live Gold Subscription and Gift Cards
Buying things on Xbox One (and Xbox 360 now) is done in good ol' local currency, so no more trying to figure out how much 800 Microsoft Points really costs. If you see a game priced at $10, it costs $10, which is much simpler. This means that instead of buying Microsoft Points at retailers, you can now buy Microsoft Gift Cards in various amounts. You can also buy Xbox Live Gold subscription cards at retailers.
PayPal
We highly recommend you use the gift and subscription cards noted above instead of putting your credit card info on your Xbox network account. Basically, if you don't put your credit card info on your account, there's nothing for hackers to potentially steal. Microsoft has greatly upped the security on Xbox network accounts over the last few years, so getting hacked isn't as common as it used to be (it was never exactly common, though, just to be clear), but it's better to be safe.
You do still have to put some form of payment option into your account, however, and we recommend using PayPal. It offers an extra couple of layers of safety and security on top of what Microsoft already does to keep your information secure.
How Much Does an Xbox Network Subscription Cost?
With a free Xbox Network account, you can play demos, watch trailers, and download apps from the Xbox Marketplace. With an Xbox Live Gold subscription, you can play online and get free games every month.
How Much Is an Xbox Network Subscription?
The basic Xbox Network subscription is free. Anyone can sign up for an Xbox Network account. If you want more perks and features, you'll need to purchase a Gold account subscription.
Note : Accessing the Xbox Network on the original Xbox console is no longer available. To use the Xbox Network, you must have an Xbox 360 or Xbox One as well as a broadband internet service provider.
What Comes With a Free Xbox Network Account?
When you register your Xbox Network account, you'll choose a nickname (called a Gamertag), which is how you will be known to other people in any games you play. You can have friends lists to keep in touch with real-life friends or new people you meet online you like to play with.
The free Xbox Network service gives you access to voice chat as well as the Xbox Marketplace. You can't play most Xbox games online without a Gold subscription, but online multiplayer is available for free-to-play games. You can use all of the various video apps like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon Prime as well.
That said, you don't need an Xbox game console to take advantage of the Xbox Network. Since Microsoft also makes Windows, your Xbox Network account will automatically integrate with many PC games. That way, you can share your achievements and utilize other social features to interact with fellow gamers.
What Is the Xbox Live Gold Membership?
Xbox Live Gold is a subscription-based service that can be purchased in one month, three month, and one-year periods. Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are $59.99 for 12 months, $24.99 for three months, and $9.99 for one month.
The paid Xbox Live Gold service gives you all of the free level features along with the ability to play games with friends online as well as early access to demos. Gold members also benefit from discounts and free games every month, making the price well worth it for frequent gamers.
How to Purchase an Xbox Live Gold Subscription ?
You don't necessarily need a credit card to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold subscription. You can use one, but you can also buy Xbox Gift Cards or Gold subscription cards at retailers. Purchase a Gold subscription card at a retailer and then enter the code on your Xbox. You can also purchase an Xbox Live Gold subscription from the official Xbox Network website and through your Xbox 360 or Xbox One console.
Xbox Live Gold Subscriptions on Xbox 360 vs. Xbox One
Your Xbox Network account will work on your Xbox 360 and Xbox One. You'll sign in with the same Gamertag on both systems. The Xbox One has a unique feature in that one Xbox Live Gold subscription applies to all of the profiles on the system, whereas Xbox 360 requires each profile to have a separate Gold subscription to play online.
PS4 vs Xbox One: Which Console Is Right for You?
Who wins when it comes to price, compatibility, and more
Is PS4 better than Xbox One? Who wins when it comes to the best console out there right now? These are questions that gamers ask themselves often. When it comes to the battle of PlayStation vs Xbox, it can be hard to know which console to buy when looking to enjoy some console-based gaming. Both systems offer high-quality experiences and great options, so you really can't go wrong with either. That said, they do both take different approaches when it comes to certain parts of what makes a console great.
While PlayStation 4 arguably has the better big-name exclusives, Xbox One has its Netflix like Xbox Game Pass service which can make it a cheaper proposition. We've tested and researched both so you can make a confident decision about which games console is for you.
PlayStation 4
• Best exclusive games.
• Smallest console size.
• Upgradeable internal hard drive.
• Virtual Reality support.
Xbox One
• Xbox Game Pass service is fantastic deal.
• Xbox One X has most powerful specs.
• Built-in 4K blu-ray player.
When it comes to Xbox or PS4, both consoles are fantastic. They both provide great games, useful media apps, great graphics, and they'll look good under your TV too. The Sony PlayStation 4 offers the best exclusive blockbuster games but the Xbox One has a huge advantage in the form of Xbox Game Pass, allowing users to pay a small fee each month to have access to a library of hundreds of great games for free.
The Xbox One also now offers a 4K Blu-Ray player as standard while the PS4 only offers 4K graphics via its PlayStation 4 Pro console. Buy a PSVR headset though and you can enjoy virtual reality games—something the Xbox One doesn't offer. Ultimately though, what you choose is almost certainly going to come down to personal preference.
Price: Evenly Matched in Every Way
PlayStation 4
• Two different console types to choose from.
• Special offers available when you shop around.
• Game bundle deals available.
Xbox One
• Budget and premium console types to pick from.
• Games bundled in with console often.
• Also doubles as a 4K Blu-Ray player.
In the battle of PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One, the prices are near identical. Both consoles are available in two different varieties. There's the standard Xbox One S and the standard PS4—both offering 1TB of storage and one controller and both with an MSRP of $300. Where things differ for the two consoles is that the Xbox One S also works as a 4K Blu-Ray player which could be useful for those users that want a home theater set up too.
If you want to spend a little more, you can buy either the Xbox One X 1TB or PS4 Pro 1TB for an MSRP of $400. Both systems are the more powerful versions of the consoles, each offering superior specifications and technical prowess so that games look better and load faster. Again, the Xbox One X is the only one of the two consoles that will also play 4K movies although the PS4 Pro does play games in 4K resolution.
